Understanding the Affordable Care Act

In order to have health coverage for the 2015 calendar year, you must have enrolled by February 15. Even if you signed-up during the last Open Enrollment Period, you must renew your plan or get a new one.

If you miss this current Open Enrollment Period, you will not be able to obtain a Government Health Plan until 2016. The only exception is if you have a Qualifying Life Event -- such as a marriage/divorce, birth/adoption of a new child, job/employment status change, or certain other major life changes -- which allows you to enroll outside of Open Enrollment.

If you miss the Open Enrollment Period and do not have a Qualifying Life Event, you can enroll in a Non-Government-Plan. These plans are meant to be temporary, and have certain limitations. Learn more about them here.

The Community Health Reform Advocacy Committee (a local task force of experts) estimates that 65,000 San Mateo County residents will qualify for subsidized or free health insurance as the law comes into effect.

Uninsured?
If you are not insured, and live in San Mateo County, you can apply online, or make an appointment to speak to a Certified Application Assistor. Go to the web sites below or call 650-616–2002.

California's Marketplace for Insurance
If you live in California, Covered California is the Health Insurance Marketplace to serve you. If you qualify for subsidized (government discounted) insurance, California is a State system. The County helps distribute State benefits, so you can get help where you live.
