Freegal - Free Music Downloads

Access songs from Sony Music’s catalog of artists. Download up to four Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each week.

Please note: The Freegal service is available to Redwood City residents with a card that begins with 29045. This does not include Unincorporated Redwood City, San Mateo County cardholders.

Freegal is an online database that provides access to songs from Sony Music’s catalog of artists.  Each library card holder may download four songs per week in the MP3 format. One may browse Freegal using genre and artist lists or search for a particular artist.  Whether you enjoy Alternative Rock, Classic Rock, R&B, Country, Classical, Pop, Latin Pop, or Jazz, the library provides access to your favorite hits. Play the file in a program such as iTunes or Windows Media Player.  The file will not expire.

  • Download Limit & Wishlist
    Download four songs per week. One's download counter resets each Sunday at 9:00 p.m. The Library also has a total weekly limit. If the Library reaches its total limit of downloads, the “Download Now” text disappears and only the “Add to Wishlist” choice is available. You can add 4 wishlist songs. Songs in “My Wishlist” become available at 9:01 p.m. Sunday Pacific Time in the priority order that they were placed on the wishlist. You have 24 hours from 9:01 p.m. Sunday Pacific time to download available songs.
  • Listen to a Song
    To preview a song, click the circular arrow icon to the left of the song title. To download a song, click the "Download Now" link to its right. When prompted, click "Save" and specify where you would like to save the file on your computer. If you are not presented with the prompt, right click on the link and select the option to save the link. This option will be labeled "Save Target As," "Save Link As," "Download Linked File," or another similar phrase, and it will let you save the song.

    Note: Anytime you click on the "Download Now" link, even if you cancel the download, you have used up one of your three downloads.

  • Using the Search Box to Locate an Artist
    Bands whose names begin with "The" are alphabetized under the letter "T." Bruce Springsteen is listed under the letter "B," rather than the letter "S."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I log into Freegal, accept the terms and conditions, and then I'm taken to the About Us page or shown a notice saying that I'm not authorized to view the site.

    There may be a setting on your computer that is preventing you from logging into the Freegal web site. The following suggestions may enable you to log in.

    Try clearing your browser history and deleting your browser cookies. How to clear the browser cookies and history varies from browser to browser. Typically, you can do it by opening the browser and clicking on the Tools menu. Then, use the "Delete browsing history" option (if you use Internet Explorer) or "Clear Recent History" (if you use Firefox). Next, you will be presented with options regarding browser history and cookies. If you are using Internet Explorer, you can consider putting the security settings back to the default.

    If you are using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, consider adjust how your browser treats temporary Internet files.

    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click on the Tools button to open its menu.
    3. Select “Internet Options."
    4. With the General tab selected, click on the "Settings" button in the Browsing History area.
    5. In the “Temporary Internet Files and History Settings” dialog box, select the option, “Every time I visit the web page."
    6. Click the OK button.
    7. Click the Apply button.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Close Internet Explorer and then re-open it and try accessing Freegal again.
  • I downloaded a song, but I can't find where it is on my computer.
  • We highly recommend that when downloading a song, you select the option to save the file to a specific location on your computer. However, if you didn't specify a location or you opted to open the file without saving it, you may use the following strategies to locate where the song was saved.

    If you are using Windows Media Player

    1. Open Windows Media Player.
    2. Click on the File menu.
    3. Toward the bottom of the menu, you should see a list of all recently played music.
    4. Click on the song file you got from Freegal, which should cause it to play.
    5. While in the Now Playing mode (you can click on the “Now Playing” tab to get there), you should see the song listed under Now Playing.
    6. Right-click on the song title and select Properties from the menu.
    7. You should now be able to see where the file is saved on your computer, listed next to "Location:" in the Properties window.
    8. From the Properties window, you can also select "Open file location," and this will cause a dialog box to open the folder that contains the file. From there, you can copy or drag it to your desktop or wherever else you would like to keep it.

    If you are using iTunes

    1. Open iTunes.
    2. Locate the song in your music area.
    3. Right-click on the song title.
    4. Select “Get Info.”
    5. Select the “Summary” tab (by default it’s the tab that’s open in the “Get Info” dialog box).
    6. Toward the bottom of the dialog box, there is a “Where” section that provides the folder path where the song is located.

    You may find in Windows Media Player or iTunes that the song file is located in a Temporary Internet File. You can go to “My Computer” from the Start menu on your computer and double-click through each of the folders listed in the "Location" or “Where” box (depending on which media player you are using). Typically, you would start with your C: drive (usually called the Local Hard Disk), click through “Documents and Settings,” and then try subsequent folders to find the song (MP3 file). Once you locate the file, drag it (or copy and paste it) to another location, such as your desktop. If it is left in the temporary folder there’s potential for it to be deleted by your computer system automatically.

    You might also try searching your computer for the files. Try limiting your search to music files and using the artist’s name or part of the song title as the search term. You may need to adjust your advanced search settings so that hidden folders are included in the search.
