FAQ

Complete Streets

In support of multi-modal transportation initiatives, Redwood City embraces the "Complete Streets" philosophy, to ensure that all city-owned and regional transportation systems are designed and operated to enable safe, attractive, comfortable, and independent access and travel for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit users of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets and multi-modal transportation are key components of the City's long-term planning, as highlighted in the Circulation Element of the New General Plan.

In keeping with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Policy Statement on Bicycle and Pedestrian Accommodations, Redwood City strives to:

  • Consider walking and bicycling as equals with other transportation modes
  • Ensure that there are transportation choices for people of all ages and abilities, especially children
  • Go beyond minimum design standards
  • Integrate bicycle and pedestrian accommodation on new, rehabilitated, and limited-access bridges
  • Collect data on walking and biking trips
  • Set mode share targets for walking and bicycling and track them over time
  • Improve non-motorized facilities during maintenance projects
