Classical Series 2013

For the classical music lover, or anyone who appreciates great musical talent, Redwood City continues its Classical Music Series starting in June. The series launches at 6 pm on June 29th with Redwood Symphony, and continues on July 20th with Opera San José, then on July 21st with the West Bay Community Band at 5pm, and winds up on September 21st at 6pm with Travis Brass, and on September 22nd at 5pm with Bay Shore Lyric Opera. Families will love these free classical concerts, performed outdoors on beautiful Courthouse Square.

 

Redwood Symphony
Saturday, June 29th
6-7:30pm
Redwood Symphony is an all-volunteer orchestra dedicated to the performance of ambitious, contemporary repertoire as well as the great orchestral classics with a special emphasis on education. Its August 2012 performance of the Berlioz Requiem at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco was critically acclaimed. Directed by Maestro Eric Kujawsky, members of the Redwood Symphony will offer familiar classical favorites from Bizet and Tchaikovsky along with a Sousa march and violinist Stephen Waarts will play selections from works by Saint-Saens and Mendelssohn.  A special treat this year will be a Beatles song, a preview of the concert the symphony and White Album Ensemble of Santa Cruz will perform across Broadway on August 10th at the Fox Theatre.

OSJOpera San José

OPERA SAN JOSE will feature the company’s principal resident ensemble consisting of sopranos, tenors, baritones and bass artists singing highlights from the greatest opera repertoire, July 20 at the Redwood City Courthouse, as part of the Redwood City Parks and Recreation ‘Classical on the Square’concert series. This 90-minute performance will include Italian classical works from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to great Italian composers including Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. Also in the program will be repertoire by the brilliant French composer Georges Bizet.

On the lighter side, popular song from the masters of the Great American Song Book including Rogers and Hammerstein II will be showcased. In addition, a sneak preview from OPERA SAN JOSE's upcoming 30th Anniversary Season opening September 7, will be presented. OPERA SAN JOSE’s 2013-14 season includes Giussepe Verdi’s comical tale of greed Falstaff, Engelbert Humperdinck’s precarious adventure Hansel and Gretel, Giacomo Puccini’s heartbreaking love story Madama Butterfly, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s dark comedy Don Giovanni.

WBCBWest Bay Community Band

The West Bay Community Band on the San Francisco peninsula is a Symphonic Band with instrumentation capable of performing all major works for wind instruments and symphonic band. It can facilitate sub-ensembles such as Jazz Band, Brass Choir and Woodwind groups. Performing an eclectic mix of music from the Renaissance through modern Symphonic, Jazz, Rock and Show music, the Band gives between six and ten performances a year at community events and dedicated concerts. The West Bay Community Band is a class in the San Mateo Union High School District Adult and Community Education Program, led by Mills High School teacher Doug Miner (conductor, educator, recording artist and performer). They have performed at the Golden Gate Park Band Festival several times, AT&T Park for the San Francisco Giants several times, at Disneyland, for many years at the Hiller Museum for Santa's arrival, and at many public events from San Francisco to San Jose.

Travis BrassTravis Brass

Travis Brass is the multitalented brass group of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West. From a standard march or traditional brass composition to jazz, ragtime and the popular music of today, this group’s diverse repertoire covers a myriad of styles to exhilarate audiences. Throughout the West Coast, Travis Brass focuses on educational outreach through hands-on clinics, master classes and interactive concerts for aspiring musicians of all ages. Travis Brass is featured on the recording “Wood ‘n Brass” and most recently appeared on the local television show Good Day Sacramento. These talented artists are active duty professional musicians working in support of Air Mobility Command and the surrounding communities. Travis Brass’ blend of sound, style and humor make them an entertaining ensemble, putting an evolutionary spin on music for tomorrow.

The northern California regional opera company, Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company was founded in 1996 by a group of passionate musicians and singers who had the desire to bring opera to all ages and all communities, and to educate and entertain them with the strongest commitment to quality at affordable prices. Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company has produced over 40 operas on a grand scale at the Ward Theater in Kingston, Jamaica, Villa Montalvo’s Carriage House, Fox Theater in Redwood City, San Mateo Performing Arts Center, Capitola Theater, McAfee Theater and the Mountain Winery. Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company is a non-profit that is unique in that it offers a wide variety of production venues for all types of events, as well as for educational tools. They will be performing selections from the world’s most famous and beloved opera arias and ensembles.
