Redwood City, CA - March 24, 2003 - Here's an update on the "2003 Sea Otter Classic Elite Road Stage Race" scheduled for Wednesday, April 9 from 9 am until 2 pm, along with information on other related events that are helping to put Redwood City on the map.
GALA PARTY: the debut of this prestigious world-class race in Redwood City is a great reason for a kick-off party – and that's exactly what's happening the night before the race: Tuesday evening, April 8 starting at 7:00 pm at the Fox Theater, 2215 Broadway in downtown Redwood City. The entire community is invited to celebrate this great race coming to Redwood City!
This will be a very special evening for the entire community, and for both long-time bicycle racing fans and new fans alike, with a bike-racing star-studded line up: "Giro d'Italia" winner Andy Hampsten, "Tour de France Feminine" winner Linda Jackson, and mountain bike World Champion Thomas Frischknecht will all be at the Fox sharing stories of fabled races and cycling experiences. Those in the audience will have a chance to ask questions and learn what makes a champion ‘tick.' Planet X will be in the house offering stunt riding shows and the night wraps up with Latin rock band Caravanserai covering Santana's hits and playing original songs, too.
ANOTHER PARTY WEDNESDAY NIGHT: after the big race on Wednesday, the party continues that night at the Fox Theater, April 9 at 7 pm, with more great live music, raffles, video of that day's exciting race, special guests, and a lot more. Either evening is just $15, with a portion of proceeds going to Redwood City schools. For advance tickets call the Fox Theatre at 1.650.369.4119 or visit www.foxdream.com.
CYCLING CLINIC: as part of Redwood City's 135th Birthday Celebration on March 29, the Sea Otter Classic will be hosting a free cycling clinic featuring coaches who work with the world's top professional bicycle racers. This event is limited to 30 participants, advance registration is required through Sea Otter Classic, 530-661-9500 or email@example.com. The Sea Otter Classic is also hosting the Planet X stunt bicycling team at this grand Birthday Bash.
SPECTATORS: the pro bicycle racers in the Sea Otter Classic love being cheered on! Spectators are welcome and urged to gather downtown for the start (9 and 11:30 am) and finish (11:00 am and 1:30 pm) of the race. Catch a free shuttle bus to special spectator areas on the race course – during the race, two shuttles will depart on the hour from the parking lot near the railroad tracks on Middlefield Road, behind Sequoia Station shopping area.
VOLUNTEERS: for those who want to really get in on the fun, volunteer course marshals are needed for this exciting race. Course marshals have the "best seats in the house" and receive lunch and a cool tee shirt from Sea Otter. Anyone interested in volunteering to help out is urged to contact Sammarye Lewis, coordinator of volunteers, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 408-297-4192.
RACE DAY INFO:
the Sea Otter Classic begins at 9:00 am on Wednesday, April 9, in Downtown
Redwood City on Broadway near Jefferson Avenue. The race will take these
professional bicyclists on a challenging multi-lap nine-mile course in
the Emerald Hills area. There will be special awards ceremonies at approximately
11:15 am (women's) and 1:45 pm (men's), also taking place downtown on
the steps of the historic courthouse.
FOR RESIDENTS AND MOTORISTS: Residents along the racecourse are asked for their patience and understanding as the estimated 200 professional bicyclists make their way through the residential areas. The City will be distributing flyers along the route to further inform the residents, and ask that they please do not park on their streets that morning, and to use extra caution if they will be driving in the area. There will be traffic impacts during portions of the race, particularly at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and El Camino Real, where the traffic will be stopped for two-to-four very short periods of time between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to allow the bicyclists to cross safely. Motorists' patience is appreciated during these short closures of El Camino Real, and during the ‘rolling closure' traffic stops elsewhere on the racecourse.
A RACE MAP AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS ALONG THE COURSE IS AVAILABLE AT WWW.REDWOODCITY.ORG/SEAOTTERCLASSIC.
