Special Poetry Event to Celebrate Black History Month at the Redwood City Public Library

Redwood City, CA - February 14, 2003 - The Friends of the Redwood City Public Library are happy to announce a special evening of poetry in celebration of Black History Month. Local poetess Kalamu Chaché will delight listeners with a reading of her own poetry and that of beloved African American author Langston Hughes on Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at 7:30 pm at the Redwood City Public Library main branch, located at 1044 Middlefield Road.

Chaché, Poet Laureate of East Palo Alto and the executive director of the Consortium for Young Women, has served the East Palo Alto and Belle Haven communities since the 1960s in numerous professional, executive, administrative, advocacy, and artistic areas of employment and volunteer service. Her prime interests are in literary/performing arts and in youth development. Over the years, she has made a significant contribution to the Martin King Jr. celebrations in Redwood City.

The author will entertain with selections of her own poetry, discuss her experiences as a writer, and then share favorite poems by Langston Hughes. In the final segment of the evening, Chaché directs the audience in the dynamic process of writing a community poem in celebration of Black History Month. This is a free event, and the public is invited to attend and participate.
