Redwood City Neighborhood Street Improvements Scheduled
Redwood City, CA - June 30, 2008 - As part of its roadway preventative maintenance program, Redwood City is implementing resurfacing projects on a number of neighborhood streets. This will provide smoother, safer, improved roadways, but will cause some inconvenience to residents and motorists in these areas during the work. The upcoming project focuses in the area approximately bordered by El Camino Real, Marshall Road, Winslow Street, Veterans Boulevard, and the northern City limit.
Neighbors are being notified of scheduling and details of the work, and appropriate “No Parking” signage will be installed. The work is scheduled to begin in mid-July and be completed in six-to-eight weeks. Below is the list of streets scheduled for this work. The short-term inconvenience consists of a requirement to keep cars off the street during certain portions of the work, and to park cars off street for approximately two days after the work.
In general, the process for resurfacing a roadway involves three phases:
- Prep Work – repair failed areas and low spots, seal large cracks with filler material, and remove weeds;
- Chip Seal – spraying the street with an “emulsion binder” and then spreading gravel over the surface temporarily giving the appearance of a gravel road until the gravel is embedded into the emulsion binder. Neighbors’ patience is most requested at this point in the project, and they are advised to drive slow and keep a greater-than-usual distance between cars;
- Slurry Seal – after the gravel has been compacted by traffic use, loose material will be swept up, and a final coating of a sand and oil mixture will be applied to “seal” the street. Until the seal is dry, neighbors are cautioned to keep cars, children, and pets from coming into contact with the roadway, as the seal material is very difficult to remove from rugs, clothing, etc.
All three phases of work require traffic detours and “no parking” restrictions on the days of the scheduled work. Normally, during the main part of the work streets will be reopened to traffic by 5 pm. However, streets may be closed later if necessary to allow the new surfacing to fully “cure.”
