City Council to Honor Notre Dame-Americorps Volunteers; Americorps / Library Literacy Fundraiser Scheduled
Redwood City, CA - May 5, 2008 – The City Council of Redwood City will honor the organization and volunteers of Notre Dame-Americorps (NDA) for their commitment to promoting literacy and education throughout the community.
A proclamation in honor of Notre Dame-Americorps will be placed before the Council at its May 12th meeting, which starts at 7 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road. These tireless, dedicated volunteers help to promote and encourage education, literacy, community empowerment, leadership development, and multicultural harmony.
Redwood City ’s Project READ, a literacy training program in the Redwood City Public Library, has been the grateful recipient of countless hours of Notre Dame-Americorps volunteer work. As part of their volunteerism in helping adults, inmates, families, and youth learn to read, these volunteers often go above and beyond their “assignments” with Project Read. For example, NDA members work in the morning with the teachers and staff of Fair Oaks Elementary School to provide tutoring for those children most in need. Then, they come to Project READ 's “Kids in Partnership” program for the afternoon. Many NDA members then join with Project READ in the evenings on their own time to tutor children and adults who use drop-in tutoring services.
NDA volunteers also work in various other elementary schools in Redwood City. The Notre Dame-Americorps web site is located at www.ndmva.org.
A special acoustic musical performance is scheduled as a fundraiser in support of volunteerism in our schools, with all proceeds going to Notre Dame-Americorps and Library Literacy Programs. NDA volunteer Jason Yano presents “Groovin’ for the Kiddies” on Friday, May 16 th at 7:30 pm, hosted by Angelica’s Bistro, 863 Main Street in Redwood City. The cost of the fundraiser is $10 per person, and the entire community is invited to join in this good cause, to help NDA and support literacy and volunteerism. RSVPs are requested to (650) 365-3226.
Both NDA and Redwood City Project READ seek volunteers to help in their goals of promoting education and literacy. Project READ can be reached at (650) 780-7077 or by visiting www.projectread-redwoodcty.org. NDA staff can be reached at 650-593-2045 or via email to san_francisco@ndmva.org
