Redwood City & Acterra Offering FREE Home Energy Audits

Redwood City, CA - March 2, 2009 – The City of Redwood City is partnering with Acterra, a non-profit environmental organization, to offer FREE energy-saving House Calls to residents in Redwood City. The Green@Home program brings trained local volunteers to residents’ homes to install simple energy-saving devices, offer tips and ideas for saving energy and water, and create an easy home energy conservation plan specifically for an individual’s home.

Mayor Rosanne Foust about to post her Green@Home sign following her home energy audit

Both Redwood City Mayor Rosanne Foust and Vice Mayor Diane Howard are leading the way for Redwood City residents, having had the home energy audits performed on their homes. In just one short visit, the Green@Home volunteers will offer these great energy-saving upgrades:

  • Provide and install a retractable clothesline
  • Install three compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Optimize water heater and refrigerator temperatures
  • Install faucet aerators and low flow showerheads
  • Show you how to measure and adjust tire pressure
  • Install up to five outlet or light switch gaskets
  • Measure energy draw of home electronics

In addition, the team will go over a comprehensive checklist of additional steps that residents can decide to take, ranging from no-cost ideas like vacuuming refrigerator coils, to low-cost options like weather stripping, to more significant investments in energy efficiency such as double-paned windows. Together, the volunteers and the resident will create a customized conservation plan to meet the household's budget and needs.

It’s easy to get more information and sign up for a FREE Home Energy Audit. And don’t forget, you can also volunteer to be trained to do Green@Home energy audits in your neighborhood - the next Green@Home volunteer training with Acterra takes place March 11 & 25, from 6:15 - 9:45 pm.  Call 650-962-9876 x350 or email greenathome@acterra.org for an energy audit or to volunteer.
