Slumping Economy Produces Great Need This Holiday Season - Business and Volunteer Help Urgently Needed

Click here for the list of locations where you can donate a new unwrapped toy or book!

Redwood City, CA - November 23, 2009 - Each year, the Christmas Toy and Book Drive, sponsored by the Redwood City Police Activities League (PAL) and the Police and Firefighters Association, has brought the holiday spirit right to the doorstep of many needy families. It’s become a welcome annual tradition in Redwood City. This year, with the continuing severe economic situation, the need is even greater while resources are declining. More and more families are seeking help, and Redwood City is encouraging businesses to step up in an easy way – setting up a donation barrel to collect toys and books for the less-fortunate.

In past years, over 50 businesses participated – this year that number is dwindling, and the City is urgently seeking local businesses that are willing to help with this program. Any business - large or small - will make a big difference by contacting PAL at the number above and requesting a donation barrel for their site. It’s easy – and it will mean so much to those in need in our community.

Community members are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys and books at any collection barrel – at City Hall, the Police Department, City libraries and community centers, any Fire Station, and at local businesses. And, this year’s Gift Wrapping Party is scheduled for Monday, December 14th from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Red Morton Community Center, 1120 Roosevelt Avenue.Drop-in volunteers are very welcome to join the fun. Volunteers are also needed to pick up food, toys, and books, put together family packages, load up Santa’s “sleigh,” help with home delivery, and more. This is a great opportunity to help bring a smile to a child's face this holiday season.

Deliveries take place with Santa Claus in a police car or a fire engine arriving at the home to hand out the presents, giving the kids a thrill they’ll long remember. Each child served receives two gifts, a book, a stuffed animal, and several stocking stuffers, all of which bring that holiday sparkle to their eyes.

Businesses can help by requesting a donation barrel - click here for the request form or call the number above. The community can help by donating to those barrels, and by volunteering at the wrapping party – this year, the need is exceptional, so the City is hopeful for strong participation from throughout the community.
