This gala celebration is part of the Redwood City Fire Department’s year-long 150th Anniversary, which opened earlier this year with a news conference, commemorative badge distribution, and display of historic fire-fighting equipment. Then the fire department and its sesquicentennial were featured during the City’s annual 4th of July parade, and now the celebration continues with the upcoming October 6th dedication of a bronze commemorative plaque at the main fire station (10 am, Wednesday, October 6, 755 Marshall Street), culminating with the fabulous Four Alarm Celebration at the Fox Theatre on November 4.

The Redwood City Firefighters’ Association sponsors its Create-a-Smile foundation, with the mission of giving back to the community, specifically to people who are victims of tragedy, violence, and misfortune and have little to no income, with a particular focus on helping children. The entire community is invited to join the Four Alarm Celebration, and know that in addition to honoring the sesquicentennial of the Fire Department, their participation is helping those in need in our community. The Create-a-Smile website is located at www.redwoodcity.org/fire/createasmile.

On the evening of September 11, 1861 – even before Redwood City was incorporated – a group of concerned citizens met at the San Mateo County Courthouse. Their mission was to organize the Redwood Hose Company for the purpose of providing fire protection to the small settlement of Mezesville and the lumber shipping port at Redwood Landing.  Since that day, the members of the Redwood City Fire Department have proudly and selflessly protected the lives and property of the citizens of Redwood City from fire and other disasters. Today, 150 years later, the Redwood City Fire Department consists of five fire stations housing five engines and one truck, and currently has over 70 staff members including firefighters, firefighter/paramedics, captains and battalion chiefs, fire prevention staff, training staff, and administrative staff, all in service of a core population of over 75,000 people, as well as to provide mutual aid to nearby communities.

Special thanks to the Fox Theatre for their support of the Redwood City Fire Department’s Sesquicentennial.
