Spring is Nearly Here – and with it comes Persian New Year Featuring Treats and a Very Special Reading at the Downtown Library!

Redwood City, CA - March 12, 2012 - The word Nowrūz literally translates to “New Day” in Iranian, but it’s also simply referred to as "Persian New Year.” Persian New Year, the beginning of the year in the Persian calendar, marks the first day of Spring. Here in Redwood City, a special Persian New Year event is planned for just a couple of days after the start of spring:

  • Thursday, March 22, 7:00 PM
Donia Bijan – Special reading by the author of Maman’s Homesick Pie: A Persian Heart in an American Kitchen
    Downtown Library Fireplace Room
Come meet the author - families are welcome!

The community is invited to join renowned chef and author Donia Bijan for a reading out of her book, that’s been described as evoking a vibrant kaleidoscope of cultures and cuisines. In 1978, when the Islamic revolution in Iran threatened their safety, Donia’s family fled to the Bay Area. Now, she is sharing her story in this rare treat for the Redwood City community. A graduate of UC Berkeley and the Cordon Bleu cooking academy in Paris, Donia presided over many acclaimed restaurants in Europe and San Francisco, earning awards for her French-inspired cuisine, before operating her own restaurant, L’Amie Donia, in Palo Alto for ten years.

Hers is a book of a family and food, stories and communication, love – and recipes! An exhilarating, heartfelt memoir, Maman’s Homesick Pie is also a reminder of the women who encourage us to shine. Books will also be available for sale. Donia will be offering guests some of her own Persian New Year cookies, and tea will be served.

The Redwood City Public Library inspires learning through innovative and visionary programming and services—literacy programs, support for school success, access to technology, safe, inviting spaces for youth and families, and gathering places that connect the members of the community with a love of reading and learning.
