  Downtown Events! WOW!

Sunday, June 13, 2010
12-6pm (parade @ 11am)
Courthouse Square

This year Mexico is commemorating a once in a lifetime event: the “Bicentenario”, in which the Redwood City community will join Mexico in celebrating 200 years of Independence and 100 years of its Revolution to commemorate these events. The community of Redwood City has been chosen to host one of the many celebrations in honor of Mexico's Bicentennial.

Among the many events, the day will be kicked off with a parade. The main stage will feature live music from 4 different groups. There will also be a community stage showcasing the local talent of children from our schools and other church and community groups that will perform theater, dance, singing and other artistic talents.

Westbay Community Band
The West Bay Community Band on the San Francisco Peninsula is a Symphonic Band that performs an eclectic variety of musical styles. It also facilitates chamber ensembles such as the West Bay Saxtet, to be featured in this concert. The group produces 6 to 10 performances per year at community events and dedicated concerts. Doug Miner (conductor, educator, recording artist and performer) leads the group. "The West Bay Community Band musicians are working very hard to get ready for this concert,” says Miner. “We hope music lovers from everywhere in the Bay Area have a chance to make an evening of it and come to the Redwood City Courthouse Square to hear the West Bay Band in this historic setting.”

Fundraising Barbeque For Local Family in Need
Fundraiser for the family of Fuka Tumanuirao
Saturday, June 5, 2010
Andrew Spinas Park
(Second Ave. and Bay Road)

In April, a fire devastated the three-bedroom apartment of Fuka Tumanuirao stealing the home and their belongings from a family of 13 and leaving the mother hospitalized after she jumped from the second-story window to escape the blaze.

In an effort to assist this family during their immense time of need, some community volunteers, along with our own Fire Department personnel and their Create-a-Smile Foundation, are helping the family out with a fundraising barbeque this Saturday, and you can help!

If you’d like to contribute, checks may be brought to the barbecue or sent (with the family’s name noted or attached) to Janet Borgens, 18 Yarnell Place, Redwood City, 94063. Donations can also go to the San Mateo Credit Union which will convert cash and checks into Visa cards. For more information or to donate food for the barbecue, call 780-7400 and ask for Redwood City fire Capt. Wade Green.
